Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend | Celebrate Equality with Your Kids

As a mother of mixed children, it is extremely important to me that my boys understand that love and kindness is all around them. The love in which they were created and raised, the love of people like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and all those who fought and continue to fight for a pure love and equality between mankind. As cliche as it may be, love finds a way to conquer.

So this Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend, I want to honor love, compassion, kindness and equality. I want to show my children that they were created with pure love and that nothing can ever stand in their way.

As scary as the world may be at times, it is forever moving forward and changing for the better. I want to show my children that humankind is innately good and that we are all equal. I want them to see a message of unwavering love and kindness.

There are countless events celebrating MLK Day around Los Angeles, but the following are events that I feel support the message of love and community in a special way that speaks to kids.

Kindness Rocks at Kidspace Museum, Pasadena, CA

Recognize and appreciate kindness this Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend! Share stories of friendship and love on a community tapestry, decorate kindness stones to share with others, and create solutions to help others in our cities and neighborhoods. Look for our special guest, Good SamariTots, who will be here with projects to help our community! 

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration Concert | Featuring the Inner City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles

Saturday, January 18, 7:00 pm

Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles, CA

At this tenth annual tribute concert, under the direction of Charles Dickerson, the Inner City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles and their Community Chorus will perform an array of uplifting numbers, including “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” “From Sea to Shining Sea,” and “I Have a Dream”—an orchestral and choral setting of Dr. King’s 1963 speech delivered during the March on Washington. The program will also feature the winners of the SCLC Annual Oratorical and Essay Contest.
