Top Kid-Friendly Destinations for Every Season
If you're anything like me, planning a family vacation means finding destinations that keep the kids entertained but also allow us parents a chance to recharge. Whether it’s a weekend getaway or a longer trip, I've learned that the key to successful family travel is picking places that offer plenty of activities for every age and stage. As a mom of two energetic boys, Princeton and Skyler, I’m always on the lookout for spots that we can all enjoy without the stress.
Here’s a roundup of my favorite family-friendly destinations, perfect for every season—whether you’re planning a beach vacation in the summer, a cozy fall retreat, or even a winter escape where you can sip hot cocoa while the kids play in the snow.
Spring Adventures
As soon as spring rolls around, my boys are itching to get outside, and honestly, so am I! The mild weather and blooming flowers make it the perfect time to explore nature and enjoy some fresh air.
1. National Parks: Spring is ideal for visiting national parks before the summer crowds hit. Last year, we explored Sequoia National Park, and Princeton loved pointing out all the different types of trees. Skyler, being the little bookworm he is, took his nature journal and spent time sketching everything we saw. National parks offer plenty of family-friendly hiking trails, scenic drives, and picnic spots. Just make sure to pack some snacks—trust me, you’ll need them!
2. Farm Visits: One of our favorite springtime traditions is visiting local farms. Gilchrist Farm, where we spent a fun-filled day last October, is perfect in the spring for baby animal encounters and tractor rides. We didn’t get to pan for gems on our last visit, so that’s already on our to-do list for next time!
Summer Escapes
When summer hits, it's all about sun, sand, and road trips. We recently packed up the Nissan Rogue Rock Creek Edition and took a family trip to Carlsbad, where we hit up LEGOLAND and spent some quality time by the pool. It was the perfect blend of fun and relaxation.
1. Beach Destinations: My boys are happiest when they’re near the water. San Diego is a favorite for us—there’s SeaWorld (just 20 minutes from Carlsbad), plenty of family-friendly beaches, and let’s not forget about the amazing food. Tower 39 Rooftop Lounge at SpringHill Suites Carlsbad was the perfect way to end our beach days with a beautiful sunset view.
2. Waterparks and Resorts: If your kids are anything like Princeton and Skyler, waterparks are a summer must. Look for resorts with built-in waterparks so you can enjoy some downtime while the kids burn off energy. A trip to Great Wolf Lodge has been on our radar, and I know it’s one of those places where the boys would have a blast.
Fall Family Fun
Fall is one of my favorite seasons for family travel—there’s just something about the cooler weather, fall foliage, and the lead-up to spooky season that makes it special. Plus, it’s the perfect time for cozy getaways before the hectic holiday season begins.
1. Pumpkin Patches and Apple Orchards: One of our favorite fall traditions is visiting a pumpkin patch. We had a great time at Gilchrist Farm on their opening day for spooky season, and I’m already planning to go back next year. They’ve got everything from petting zoos to corn mazes, and it’s an easy day trip from LA. The boys always enjoy picking out their own pumpkins, and it’s a great chance to slow down and soak in the season.
2. Autumn Getaways: For a more laid-back vibe, consider a fall retreat to a cozy cabin. Think fireplaces, s’mores, and nature walks. We love the idea of heading to Big Bear Lake for a weekend to take in the fall colors and enjoy some quiet family time. It’s perfect for those cooler, sweater-weather days.
Winter Wonderlands
Winter doesn’t have to mean staying indoors. With a little planning, you can find destinations that are magical in the winter, whether you’re looking to escape the cold or embrace it.
1. Mountain Escapes: If your family loves snow, head to the mountains for some winter fun. We’re thinking of taking the boys to Lake Arrowhead this winter for a mix of tubing, snowball fights, and cozy evenings by the fire. Princeton is already talking about building the biggest snow fort ever, while Skyler just wants to sip hot chocolate and read in front of the fireplace—such different vibes, but I love it!
2. Warm Weather Retreats: Not a fan of the cold? A warm-weather escape might be more your style. Arizona or Palm Springs are perfect winter getaways for families who want to trade snow for sunshine. Imagine lounging by the pool while the kids splash around—sign me up!
No matter what time of year you’re planning to travel, there’s a perfect family-friendly destination waiting for you. Whether it’s the thrill of a waterpark, the charm of a pumpkin patch, or the magic of a snowy mountain retreat, every season offers its own kind of adventure. And if you ask me, the best memories are the ones we make together—whether we're hiking through a national park or simply exploring a new city as a family.
